Message 263: Rubbernecks

On October 11, 2005 Thom posted the lyrics to an unreleased song, “Rubbernecks”:

their dotting all the tees
and crossing their eyes
welcome to the future
it opened up my eyes
its creeping up the car park
its coming up the drive
rubbernecks with cameras
petrol and bonfires(heres the loud bit)

we need to keep away the rubbernecks
we need to keep away the rubbernecks
me me my my

Gustave Flaubert defined “Rubbernecks” in his Dictionary of Accepted Ideas: “RUBBERNECKS. All Parisians are. But nine out of ten Parisians are from the provinces. In Paris, everybody gorms, nobody works.”

Message 262: Latitude, Longitude

On Radiohead.com today appeared latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates.

latitude111606.png

These coordinates, 37 25.818 N, 122 05.36 W, point to an area near Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California and related to or a part of Shoreline Golf Links. Strange? Indeed.

Message 261: Dead Children Playing, a Book of Pictures

‘Dead Children Playing’; a Book of Pictures: “Unlike many commercial artists working in the field of record packaging, the elusive duo responsible for Radiohead’s artwork tend to start with huge canvases and big buckets of paint. For the last half-decade or so these paintings have featured in whole or in part on the shelves of record shops throughout the world. Containing almost all the paintings produced by the consistently paranoid Stanley Donwood and the persistently enigmatic Dr. Tchock between about 1999 and about 2005, this Picture Book also holds between its covers page after page of sketchbook pages, as well as a plethora of images found on now-defunct digital recording media; a cornucopia of never-before-seen artwork.”

Message 259: Nigel?

It was reported several places (NME and Dead Air Space) that Radiohead were working with a different producer, Spike Stent. Yet a recent Dead Air Space entry would suggest that the most recent recording sessions are being produced by Nigel Godrich.

Message 258: No Needless Noise

Today, Stanley posted an image on Dead Air Space:

No Needless Noise

This image resembles the image found here, an advertisement for the Anti-Noise League from 1935. A Wikipedia entry has been created, but it lacks sufficient information.

Message 257: Tsen S’tar A, or “A Rat’s Nest” Backwards

On the At Ease message board, a thread appeared linking to a download of the first of “A Rat’s Nest” played backward. Unable to ever download the file, one was made: “A Rat’s Nest,” the first 43 seconds, backwards.

The single can be purchased electronically as a so-called b-side (does an mp3 have an a-side?) to “Analyse” here (purchase will benefit At Ease).

Message 255: Paragraph 5, Subsection B

Two new songs, two new b-sides: “A Rat’s Nest” and “Iluvya.” Possible lyrics to “A Rat’s Nest”:

Clicks on the phone
I cannot help you
Caught by our words
Caught in a rat’s nest

Eat our young
Chew through wires
Sewn up in stitches
Stitches

Deny all knowledge
Paragraph 5, Subsection B
The committee is content, content
To live in a rat’s nest

A rat’s nest: “A place of great clutter or disorder.”

The good people in the At Ease forums are working out the lyrics.

Thank you.
